I'm 65, Now What?

As we drift through this adventure that we call life, there are a number of birthdays that stick out.  There's the honor of being able to drive when you turn 16.  The respect of becoming an adult at 18.  The ability to enjoy a glass of wine with dinner when you reach 21.  Retirement Planning at age 65

As you grow older, the excitement seems to wane a bit, but there is still something to celebrate when a person has reached 65 years old.  While some things have changed, one thing that has remained constant is that age-old question ... what now?  To help you figure it out, let's look at some things you'll be able to enjoy.

Hello, Special Treats

Everyone loves to save money, and for seniors, the discounts have always been plentiful.  You can buy movie tickets for less.  Enjoy an Early Bird special at the diner down the street.  And take advantage of tax benefits, which we'll discuss below.  Now that you've reached 65, a whole slew of similar discounts and specials will be available.  Keep in mind, however, that many discounts are now available even earlier, so you don't have to wait for all of them.

Hello, Medicare

Millions of Americans are taking advantage of the Medicare program.  Designed to assist seniors and disabled persons with their medical bills and needs, Medicare can be a great asset.  For this, you don't have to wait until you're 65.  Instead, you can apply for benefits three months prior, and once they're activated, you can enjoy the full benefits on the first day of the month in which you were born.  If you forget to enroll right away, you will have three months following your 65th birthday to enroll without any penalties.  And if you have health benefits through an employer, you can stay with that insurance until such time that you need to switch.  In fact, you are given eight months to apply once you've lost other medical coverage.

Hello, Bonus Payments

This little bonus will only count if you haven't applied for Social Security yet.  Although you can legally apply when you hit 62, you'll probably be better off if you wait.  That's because retiring before your full retirement age (which, for a Baby Boomer like yourself will be either 66 or 67 years old) will cause a decrease in your benefit amounts.  On the flip side, if you delay your application, your will receive bonus payments.  All the way up until the age of 70.  Which means that putting off your retirement can be quite beneficial.

Hello, Tax Deductions

Once you've hit the age of 65, you will be able to enjoy additional tax deductions, depending on how you file and your current marital status.  For example, if you are unmarried and do not itemize, you will see your standard deduction raise from $5700 to $7100.  If you are married and only one of you are over 65, the normal $11,400 deduction will now be $12,500.  If you are married and you're both at least 65, you can expect your standard deduction to raise all the way up to $13,600.

But that's not all.  Depending on the state in which you reside, you may be eligible for a property tax break.  A total of 45 states, in addition to the District of Columbia, are currently offering a break of some kind.  This break may vary from state to state, but your tax assessor's office can provide you with all the details.

Dow Tries To Hold Support

As of 10:30 a.m. EDT Wednesday, the Dow is trying to bounce at an area of logical support. The downward sloping trendline acted as resistance near the red and orange arrows below. The breakout from early August is being tested now near the green arrow. Williams %R shows waning downside [...]

Over the past few months it seemed like other things occupied most of my time and I really cut back on the number of posts I did on here. Although it is still quite warm here and summer is still going strong, I think it is time to get back to a regular schedule and see if I can spend more time blogging and networking.

Without further ado I'd like to share some amazing blog posts written recently by some old and new friends. Check them out!

Intel researcher Ling Liao on optical communications

We named Ling Liao, a senior optical researcher in Intel's Photonics Technology Lab, to our 2006 TR35 list for her work to enable the use of standard silicon in complex optical chips. When we caught up with her recently, she spoke to us about why computers may soon require high-speed optical data transmission. She also took the time to explain why ordinary silicon is the best material for the job, despite its optical restrictions, and how her team is overcoming those limitations.

Are You Counting On An Inheritance?

A recent Globe and Mail article suggested that receiving an inheritance may be a thing of the past and estate planning will be only used by high net worth people. Early reports stated that Canada’s baby boomers are on the threshold of an enormous wealth transfer from their parents – supposedly the wealthiest generation that [...]

Sunday this'n'that

It's been a busy few days in the Money Tree House hold. Time for a bit of an update.

Friday I headed into the city for my specialist appointment. She was pleased to see that I am still doing relatively well. She agreed to let me stay status quo for now. We will know by the end of September if being back to work (busyness and stress) will affect me or not.  I will have to have another colonoscopy in November. Since this one will be done in the city I am going to have to stay in a hotel near the hospital. No driving far with that special prep drink inside you :-)

I gave myself $40 for the trip into the city. I used $16.50 to top up my tank. $3 went to the parking at the hospital. I felt like celebrating my good news ( the status quo, not the future poke and prod aka colonoscopy) so I treated myself to a $5.99 hardcover in the discount part of Indigo books. It is called the Postmistress and is set in WW2. Haven't started it yet.  Since I was in and out of the hospital so quickly I was making good time. I was debating going straight home or stopping for lunch. There is a DQ in the city that is only open in the summer and only serves ice cream things not the food part. I hadn't been there in years and it just felt right. I stopped for a cone instead of lunch and headed to a park a couple blocks away to just sit and relax and enjoy the moment. I don't do that quite enough I think. So  my day into the city cost me just under $30

DS2 is home from his canoe trip. I was anxious as he is out of contact for the whole time and, well, he's only 15 and a mother worries. He had a great time. Altogether in the 6 days they canoed and portaged 128 miles. This was through lakes, rivers, marshy area and rapids. They tented on the shores at night. It rained part of one day, and during one night while they were up there so that wasn't too bad. One of the leaders of this group, who is 22 now, did this trip when he was 15. That year, they came across a family who had hit the rapids badly, lost their canoe and were floundering on rocks in the middle of the river. That scout group rescued the family and ended up receiving medals of honour.

DS1 is at a pick up tourney for hockey up north this weekend. He is having a blast. First time he's been on skates since April and he was beyond excited to go. It's a fun tourney, co-ed, all ages. They played a tough team yesterday. They lost, but not by too much. I have never seen DS lose so happily before.  You see, on this team was none other than Stanley Cup 2012 LA Kings, Dwight King, and his brother, Washington Capitols, DJ King. DS skated by Dwight then went over to his dad and whispered 'holy cow he's big!!"  For a hockey kid to play against an NHL'er is a pretty big deal in their world :-). I wanted to get a picture of them together but no one else is doing that and DS said "please don't be THAT mom, mom"

I am enjoying my last weekend before school starts. Really am appreciating all the little moments.

Happy Sunday all

Mega Millionaires See Continued Opportunity in China

Author(s):
Adriana Reyneri
The U.S. economy is weighing on the minds of mega millionaire investors, who see greater opportunities abroad then they do at home, according to the $25 Million Plus Investor 2012 study released this week by Millionaire Corner.
More than three-fourths of these mega Millionaires indicate that “the economic downturn and the overall United States economy has been a major concern to me over the last two years.” Only 38 percent expects the situation to improve in the next six to 12 months.
These savvy, hands-on investors express greater levels of concern about the U.S. economy than they do about economic conditions in other countries and appear likely to take advantage of growth opportunities overseas. Close to 80 percent identify the U.S. economy as a current economic concern, and 73 percent say they are worried about stock market conditions. Less than 69 cite the European debt crisis as a concern, and 58 percent, growth in China.
When asked to rate nations with the most investment potential, $25 million plus investors rank America below China and “other” nations, and the U.S. is followed closely by Europe and Brazil. Though China remains the favorite of mega Millionaire investors, attitudes toward the investment potential of Asia, Europe and the U.S. appear to be shifting.
In our 2010 survey of $25 million plus investors, 32 percent identified China as the country with the most potential for investment, compared with 24 percent today. Another 15 percent cited India two years ago, compared with 8 percent today. At the same time, the U.S. has risen in multi millionaires’ estimation. Only six percent indicated the U.S. had the most investment potential in 2010, compared to 13 percent today. Europe also gets a more favorable rating, from 8 percent in 2010 to 12 percent this year.
Mega Millionaires include international products in their top-five list on most likely investments, which includes individual stocks (62 percent), money market mutual funds (43 percent), checking and savings accounts (43 percent), mutual funds (43 percent) and international investments (41 percent).
How do some mega millionaires select their international investments? About one-fourth of these affluent investors hire advisors outside the United States who are investing in international markets.

Over-saving is inefficient

So is over-spending.  But I won’t get into that here.
I had a question from a reader asking what my Myers Briggs type is – and it’s INTJ.
Despite the rarity of that personality type (aren’t we all such special snowflakes though?), there’s been some anecdotal surveys that determined that INTJ’s are overly represented amongst the early [...]
